For this project, I was instructed to choose an Advanced Photoshop tutorial online and attempt to recreate it in my own chosen manner with the graphics skills I have acquired this year.
TUTORIAL
I found the tutorial I used for this project on DigitalArtsOnline.co.uk under a section on the top Photoshop Tutorials of the year. The one I chose was created by artist Daniel Caballero who used his sister as a model to create a vector image using the pen tool and other options in Adobe Photoshop. For extra details, he included tattoos and an interesting design on her shirt to enhance the creativity in the project. For my tutorial, I decided to mostly focus on the skin and the clothing parts of the vector image, considering I have never attempted this kind of project before. I used a photo of actress and model Cara Delevingne to model my art after, my process and final product can be seen below.
PROCESS |
The first thing that I did with the original photo is mask out the background. Then, I used the color selection tool and pen tool to create a basic outline of the skin, which I then outlined with a dark brown color to use as the skin lines. Next, I moved on to the hair, which was completed similarly to the skin, in which I made a rough outline of where it was. My next step was to fill in the blanks, such as the eyebrows, eyes, mouth, details of the hair and skin that I may have missed with the pen tool, and other various detailing that I completed with the paintbrush tool. My next step was outlining the clothing the clothing with the paintbrush tool in a dark brown color. Next, I worked on the clothing, which I used the pen tool and paintbrush tool for. Finally, and most importantly, I added the final details to the skin and clothing by using the pen tool on multiply mode to create highlights and shadows. Finally, I created a gradient overlay to make the final product look composed and more interesting, as well as a background.
FINAL PRODUCTI am very pleased with my final product, and think I managed my time efficiently while working my way through it. I think the product would be better if I were to have completed it in Adobe Illustrator, considering that the program automatically straightens out the lines drawn by the paint brush tool, and the lines I drew in illustrator were shaky and inconsistent. Other than that, I think that the project is very neat and composed, and is proportionally accurate. I would very much like to do this project again with a mixture of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to improve it.
